Singer/songwriter Richard Ashcroft has slammed criticism from former fans who hold him responsible for splitting up The Verve at the height of their fame.

THE DRUGS DON'T WORK rockers announced their parting in 1999, but Ashcroft claims he is still beleaguered by fans who blame him for the decision.

And the outspoken rocker has no sympathy for their simmering resentment, insisting, "S**t happens."

He says, "I have no time for those kind of people.

"People die of cancer, s**t happens, a band's a band.

"You feel stupid when people won't let go - it makes it (spoof rock band) Spinal Tap."
