Kalamazoo? Review

Weak
It's hard not to like the feel-good nature of Kalamazoo?, a comedy-drama about three girlfriends who return for their 10-year high school reunion. It's a comforting movie, one that lets you know that it's OK to be in your late 20s, have no clue as to who you are, and still change course.

I wish I could say it's a good movie, but an unspeakably lame concept pretty much grounds any hope of that. As the three friends visit and ultimately discover their limitations -- represented by the revealing of the school's time capsule, which holds everyone's then-future hopes -- the women are escorted by the spirits of their dead grandmothers (played by the motley crew of Chita Rivera, Renée Taylor, and Claire Bloom). Yes, you've read correctly. It's an unnecessary idea, stealing time away from the three friends' personal struggles, which is really the meat of the story. Seriously, if you took the grandmother subplot out, what would you lose?

The Producers (1968) Review

Extraordinary
Mel Brooks' directorial debut occurred in 1968. It was his gift to the world. And, you might ask, what was his gift originally titled? Springtime for Hitler. Springtime for Hitler, re-titled The Producers (probably for reasons of political correctness, which the film appears not to give a damn about), was a movie about two theatre producers who take it upon themselves to make a fortune off of a flop.

This unlikely scam features the seduction of old ladies for financing, the purchasing of a script titled: "Springtime for Hitler: A Musical Romp with Adolf and Eva", the hiring of the worst director and actor possible, and, of course, setting it all to music.

Gold Diggers Review

Terrible
I can't blame you for taking in interest in Gold Diggers. Box cover girl Nikki Ziering has those skanky porn-star looks that your eye is immediately drawn to, and the promise of excessive nudity on her part looks readily doable.

Surprise: Ziering is barely in the film at all, and her few scenes are so clumsily grafted into the picture that even the most pathetic pornographer would be shamed by witnessing them.

Alfie Review

Good

Playing an inveterate womanizer as a sympathetic hero didn't work especially well for Michael Caine in 1966's "Alfie." He was Oscar-nominated for the performance, but his title character was a misogynistic, egomaniacal cad -- taking advantage of vulnerable women, then disposing of them offhandedly. Even when a vague health problem became a plot point meant to turn his life around, there was still nothing redeemable about the jerk.

On the other hand, in this year's "Alfie" remake, the irresistible Jude Law plays a more credibly charismatic and playful playboy whose contented superficiality steadily gives way to emerging self-awareness and perceptible depth -- which surprises even Alfie himself.

As the wily rake admits -- frankly, charmingly and direct-to-camera -- his concurrent affairs with a bevy of Manhattan beauties are a product of good looks, practiced flattery, an upscale metrosexual wardrobe, his English accent and the fact that he drives a limo.
