Former REM drummer BILL BERRY stunned fans of the American rockers at a gig on Friday (9OCT03), by reuniting with the band onstage.

Berry, who retired from the band in 1997, travelled to Raleigh, North Carolina to catch the penultimate gig of their North American tour - and joined his former bandmates on stage for a rousing encore.

After singing backing vocals on REM's first ever single RADIO FREE EUROPE, Berry took to the drums for a rendition of unreleased track PERMANENT VACATION.

It's only the second time Berry has rejoined the band since his departure - in August 1999 in Atlanta he joined frontman Michael Stipe and guitarists Mike Mills and PETER BUCK onstage for a wave.

Berry quit REM two years after suffering a brain aneurysm onstage at a concert in Switzerland. He recently became a fully-trained sushi chef.
