The 40-year-old actress portrayed the character Annette Hargrove in the hit 1999 teen drama about rich kids in New York City involved in a sensational sex scandal. It also featured her ex-husband Ryan Phillippe and good friend Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Gellar is returning to portray sinful Kathryn Merteuil in the upcoming TV adaptation and Witherspoon can't wait to see the drama unfold on the small screen.

"I'm excited!" Witherspoon gushed to ET Online. "Sarah's a good friend of mine, and our kids are in preschool together, so I'm really excited. It's a lot of the original people involved, so yeah, I'll be watching."

Gellar has been joined by the former The O.C. star Peter Gallagher for the TV revamp; he will be playing evil billionaire Edward Valmont - the father of Phillippe's original character, Sebastian Valmont.

The new Cruel Intentions TV project will be set 15 years after the film, and the plot will centre around the corrupt world of Bash Casey, Sebastian Valmont's son, after he discovers his late father's private diary.

Drop Dead Diva actress Kate Levering will take on Witherspoon's Annette, while Roger Kumble, the director and writer of the Cruel Intentions film, will be back to direct the pilot, which he co-wrote with Lindsey Rosin and Jordan Ross.

The Cruel Intentions television series is currently filming and star Gellar has been sharing behind-the-scenes snapshots from the set on Instagram in recent weeks.

The film and TV revamp are modern adaptations of Choderlos de Laclos' scandalous novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses.
