The X-Men star became a social media target recently after she suggested the young beauties were not "true supermodels", echoing remarks made by Stephanie Seymour, and now she's clarifying what she said.

The 1999 Sports Illustrated cover girl tells Us Weekly, "First of all, I was asked my opinion about a social media trend, no specific names were ever mentioned.

"Secondly, I'm embarrassed that I even used the word 'supermodel'. It’s a dumb word that has always been too loosely thrown around.

"These two ladies (Jenner and Hadid) are in a stratosphere that I never came close to in the modelling world, and I know they're working their butts off. That said, it's not a competition and we don't get anything out of pitting women against each other."

As previously reported, Romijn appeared to bash Jenner, and Hadid in a recent Entertainment Tonight interview, in which she admitted she was frustrated with the current crop of models gaining momentum through social media.

"I know a lot of people - legitimate fashion people - can’t stand it," she said. "(They) hate it that these social media stars are now the supermodels in fashion. They are not true supermodels."

Tyra Banks recently came out in support of the 20-something runway stars in an essay posted on her website about the escalating war of words over the supermodel term.

She wrote: "This supermodel war is raging and it's really tearing me apart... There's a level of poetic first-hand experience and understanding that I have and want to share about this escalating battle between supermodels of the past and present.

The 42-year-old believes the feud stems from how hard it was to be a supermodel before all the technological advances: "We worked runways and shot magazine spreads together, schlepped to countless go-sees, used pay phones for on-the-go communication, and subways for transportation around the globe.

"We started out by booking low-end work for janky magazines that no longer exist and walked in way too many showroom fashion shows at the local mall. And, after all that hard work, dedication, sacrifice, sidewalk pounding, map folding, metro riding, model apartment living... after all the blood, sweat, fears and floods of tears... we finally were bestowed with the coveted title of Supermodel!"

But, defending today's models, Banks insists they work just as hard as she and her peers did back in the day.

"You're kicking a**, working hard, running from show to show, shoot to shoot and party to party... while showing the world post by post that it looks so easy, when in reality, it is anything but."
