Frankenstein Unbound Review

Weak
John Hurt, Bridget Fonda, Raul Julia... Roger Corman??? This bizarre mashup of Frankenstein and Back to the Future is alternately interesting (with good production values, at least for some of the time) and completely bizarre. Hurt plays a futuristic scientist (dig his clothes... dig the kids' clothes!) who opens a portal in time and ends up in Victorian England, along with a real-life Dr. Frankenstein. The usual mayhem breaks loose as Frank marauds the countryside, before being zapped into an alternate reality. How's that? Don't ask. It involves lasers.

Addams Family Values Review

OK
When I interviewed Barry Sonnenfeld, he told me he passed up Forrest Gump in order to make the sequel to The Addams Family. Bad move, Barry. You should have quit while you were ahead. While Ricci, Julia, and Huston are as fun as ever, this story -- involving a murderous gold digger and a stupid summer camp for the kiddoes -- has nothing on your original. Sorry, but at least you learned from this one, right? We have higher hopes for Men in Black 2.

Eyes Of Laura Mars Review

Good
Vaguely supernatural thrillers were a dime a dozen in the 1970s -- this one's about a controversial photographer (Faye Dunaway) who inexplicably begins having visions where she sees through the eyes of the local serial killer. Naturally she witnesses a bunch of murders, no one believes her, and soon he starts stalking her directly. While all eyes are on the creepy driver (Brad Dourif), any one of a half-dozen supporting actors could be The One. Absurd, yes, but it's got a certain '70s vibe that you usually only get from Gene Hackman and/or Clint Eastwood vehicles.

La Peste Review

OK
A South American city (presumably Buenos Aires, home town of director Luis Puenzo) gets a little visit by the Bubonic Plague fairy, and all hell breaks loose. Well, sorta. La Peste is actually a pretty sleepy little drama, much in keeping with the dread-packed Camus novel it's based on. Existentialist ennui aside, the story of an American doctor doing his time in a strange land doesn't hold much promise. Puenzo's political commentary gets muddled in with this, and the whole thing becomes a movie with two heads, neither of them compelling.

The Morning After Review

Weak
Lifetime-achievement Oscar winner Sidney Lumet made a lot of great movies. He also made a whole lot of utter crap, and one of the cellar dwellers is this, The Morning After, a Jane Fonda vehicle that alternately insults you and makes no sense at all.

Lumet earns points for starting off with a bang. The movie opens with a haggard Fonda, her feathered hair coming across like a fright wig, rousing out of bed next to a man. She's a little disoriented... who is he? She turns to wake him up, only to find a steak knife jabbed in his chest. But she can't remember the night before! Did she kill the guy? Or is this the most retarded frame-up in the history of cinema?
