Randy Jackson is officially returning to American Idol, reports Rolling Stone magazine. A source, speaking to TVLine has confirmed the news.

Whilst some of the judges for the upcoming series of American Idol are yet been announced, Randy Jackson will sit alongside newcomer Mariah Carey to judge wannabe singers on the show. "The rumors are true," a source close to the show told the website, confirming that Jackson will be involved. The departures of judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez may have caused doubts amongst the show’s staff and fans, but the recent, big name additions will reassure fanatics that the 12th season of the talent contest will stand up against the rest. It was thought that Jackson – the show's only remaining original judge – might step down from his position and take on a ‘mentor’ role. Simon Cowell, a former judge on the show, tweeted his support for Jackson by saying, "Just heard randy is back on idol. Right decision."

One star mooted as a possible judge is rapper Nicki Minaj, who caused controversy last week by allegedly supporting the republican candidate, Mitt Romney. She has now confirmed the confusing lyrics in her song were purely satire, and reaffirmed her support for Obama. She wasn’t so clear on her involvement on Idol, though: "You know something, I don't know yet. I really don't know. I have no comment on it," she said when asked about it last week at the MTV Video Music Awards.
