The U.S. Office character Dwight Schrute, played by actor Rainn Wilson, looks to be getting a promotion, with news emerging that he will front a NBC spin-off show in 2013, according to Deadline.com.
The show will reportedly see the fan-favorite return to his family's beet farm and bed-and-breakfast - a long running joke on The Office. Speaking of the project - set for midseason 2013 - a source revealed, "Paul and Rainn have been joking for years about Dwight's life on the farm, his family and how ill-suited he is to run a B&B.A while ago, it started to feel like a show to them". Though Dwight is a hugely popular character on The Office - spin-off's don't always prove to be a great idea. Matt Le Blanc failed to maintain the popularity of his Friends character in 'Joey', and the Happy Days' spin off 'Joanie loves Chiachi' is often cited as one of the worst in television history. However, The Jeffersons went on to achieve monumental success (born form All in the Family), as did Kelsey Grammer in Frasier (Cheers).
Despite the speculation, Wilson is expected to stay with The Office for the time being, and Nbc is likely to renew the series despite the recent departure of Steve Carrell last season. Cryptically tweeting last night, Rainn told followers, "Don't believe everything you read in the press, ok?"
