The members of Radiohead have spoken out after a group of fans were reportedly attacked during a listening event for the band's new album in Turkey.
Record store Velvet Indieground in Istanbul hosted the event for the album A Moon Shaped Pool on Friday night (17Jun16), and it was later alleged on social media that fans were attacked by a gang of men.
Reddit user Rawkon posted a Periscope video and a YouTube excerpt of the attack, which allegedly took place because the fans were drinking alcohol during Islam’s holy month of Ramadan.
Sky News released video of the incident, which showed attackers bursting into the store shouting, "close this place down" and "who the f**k is running this place".
There is a noise of bottles breaking, and a man tells fans, "Get the f**k out, close this place down, I'll kill you, I mean it, I'll kill you... I'll burn this place with you inside."
The rockers said in a statement on Saturday (18Jun16), “Our hearts go out to those attacked tonight at Velvet IndieGround in Istanbul. We hope that someday we will be able to look back on such acts of violent intolerance as things of the ancient past. For now, we can only offer our fans in Istanbul our love and support.”
Entertainment Weekly reports that Facebook user Karl Ertunc wrote that the gang began destroying the store after kicking and punching the fans. "20 and 25 men all of a sudden started beating up the guests, some of whom had been standing inside and some outside the Velvet Indieground music store, drinking beer and other refreshments," he recalled.
"Then the thugs entered the store kicking and punching the guests and destroying the records and the equipment.”
Another Reddit user claiming to be one of the event’s hosts wrote, “We were beaten by more than 20 men with pipes in their hands, beer bottles were broken on our heads, I don’t even know how we made it out.”
There are no confirmed reports of any injuries or arrests.
