Prince's reclusive one-time protege APOLLONIA has recorded a new version of her former boss' WHEN DOVES CRY for a Purple Rain movie tribute album.
Apollonia, real name Apollonia Kotero, was approached to revisit the film in which she starred alongside Prince, for a 25th anniversary tribute in the upcoming issue of American music magazine SPIN.
And when editor Doug Brod decided to put together a tribute album to boost sales of the issue. Apollonia agreed to revamp When Doves Cry.
The album, Purplish Rain, also features Purple Rain soundtrack covers from Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings and Of Montreal.
Apollonia's When Doves Cry is a duet with rocker Greg Dulli.
Prince, who is famous for pulling the plug on tribute recordings of his tracks, has greenlighted the new SPIN album.
The accompanying magazine will be dedicated to all things Prince and Purple Rain.
