Gerald Cavendish Grosvenor, the Duke of Westminster, has died, aged 64.
The 64-year-old, who was Britain's wealthiest landowner passed away at the Royal Preston Hospital in Lancashire, England on Tuesday (09Aug16).
"It is with the greatest sadness that we can confirm that the Duke of Westminster, Gerald Cavendish Grosvenor died this afternoon at Royal Preston Hospital," a statement from his estate reads. "He was taken there from the Abbeystead Estate in Lancashire where he had suddenly been taken ill.
"His family are all aware and they ask for privacy and understanding at this very difficult time.
The Duke, who owned land surrounding Buckingham Palace in London, was named the third richest Brit by The Sunday Times earlier this year (16).
Close to several members of Britain's royal family, including Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana, his wife, Natalia, is one of Prince William's godparents.
His 24-year-old Hugh Grosvenor, will inherit his title, and become the seventh Duke of Westminster. Hugh is one of Prince George's godparents.
