Brand new artist Nik Lloyd has just released the video for his official debut track, Ain't That Just The Way (ft. A Girl Called Ruth). Hailing from Flint, North Wales, Nik Lloyd's drawn comparisons to early Plan B in his gritty lyrics laid over melodic production.
For this first taste of his music, Nik has teamed up with fellow Welsh expat A Girl Called Ruth, who's lent the song (the chorus for which is borrowed from Lutricia McNeal's hit of the same name) her stunning vocals. 2014 is set to be an exciting year for Nik Lloyd, with his first album set to drop in the first half and a number of live shows due to be announced imminently.
Three years living in the capital has done nothing to break Nik Lloyd's small town roots; the singer's music continuing to draw from his experiences growing up in Flint, North Wales. It's this history which provides compelling texture to the music he makes (even if the video for his debut single is an edit of the London-centric Kidulthood).
Ain't That Just The Way, a nod to Lutricia McNeal's 1997 top 10 hit from which the track borrows its chorus, is a slickly produced, anthemic official debut. The song blends urban elements with brilliant pop melodies in a manner reminiscent to that of early Plan B - not surprising for an artist who cites key influences as diverse as Blur, Deftones and Kendrick Lamar - with Lloyd's gritty poetry juxtaposed by the stunning vocals of fellow Welsh expat A Girl Called Ruth.
The accompanying video features scenes from modern classic Kidulthood edited to match the bleak, kitchen sink realism of Lloyd's lyrics, which tackle drugs, teen pregnancy and other issues he witnessed back on the streets of Flint.
Music has been a part of Nik's life since childhood - he's been writing and producing since he was just nine years old. Ain't That Just The Way marks his first official release ahead his debut album, set to drop in 2014.
Ed Sheeran has admitted the personal nature of his songs has caused him to lose a few friends.
