A MOZART opera featuring the severed heads of the Prophet Muhammad, Jesus and Buddha has been axed in Berlin over fears it will incite violence. Berlin's Deutsche Oper cancelled the IDOMENEO production after witnessing the backlash following POPE BENEDICT XVI's recent misconstrued comments about Islam and last year's (05) publication in a Danish newspaper of Muhammad cartoons. In a statement, the opera company said, "We know the consequences of the conflict over the (Muhammad) caricatures. "We believe that needs to be taken very seriously and hope for your support." Berlin's mayor, KLAUS WOWEREIT, has slammed the decision, saying, "Our ideas about openness, tolerance and freedom must be lived out on the offensive. "Voluntary self-limitation gives those who fight against our values a confirmation in advance that we will not stand behind them."
