Plan B started off his musical career writing for a boyband.
The soul and hip hop star started in music aged 11 when he wrote a song for his friends after they formed a band at school called E7.
He explained: "I think from age 11 I attempted writing my first song. A group of friends of mine were just starting a boyband up called E7 because East 17 had just had a hit with 'Stay Another Day' so I was like, 'Oh I'll write for you'.
"I was 10 or 11 I remember going home and writing them a song. I didn't have any music or anything.
"I don't remember what it was about, but that was my first attempt and I knew I could do from that age.
"Then I was at school and I stopped playing football and started getting into girls and music, that just took over."
The singer - real name Ben Drew -also talked about how growing up with an eclectic musical background helped develop his all encompassing attitude to making music.
He said: "When I grew up, there were lots of different types of people - you had the grungers, the metallers then the jungle fans and the garage fans, I never stuck to one type of music.
Ben also added that the biggest focus for him now is to tell good stories.
Speaking on Britain's Radio1, he added: "I don't discriminate against music - I like it all. But first and foremost I'm a storyteller, and now the music is secondary and what's most important is that I'm telling stories."
Plan B's second album 'The Defamation of Strickland Banks' is available from April 12.
