Spanish opera star Placido Domingo has apologised to fans for pulling out of a series of upcoming concerts due to poor health.

The veteran tenor is recovering in his native Madrid after undergoing hospital treatment on Monday (08Jul13) for a pulmonary embolism, caused by a blood clot in his lung.

His publicist, Nancy Seltzer, revealed on Tuesday (09Jul13) that he was "responding very well to treatment", but had to clear his schedule for almost two weeks to allow the singer time to rest.

Now Domingo, 72, has taken to his page to reach out to fans and express his disappointment at scrapping five performances in a production of Il Postino at the Teatro Real in Madrid, as well as a gig in the city's Plaza Mayor square on 21 July (13).

He writes, "I will be feeling much better soon. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. The saddest part of it all is being in my own city and unable to perform for Madrid's public."
