Phil Spector's ex-wife RONNIE SPECTOR GREENFIELD is "devastated" the producer has been charged with the murder of B-movie actress Lana Clarkson.

The former RONETTES singer told reporters in New York on Monday (08DEC03) she could not believe her former spouse is capable of such a violent crime.

She says, "I feel awful. I don't think he would do anything like this. I had never seen him violent like that, with a gun or anything."

Ronnie - who claims Spector once threatened to send a hitman after her during their volatile union, which ended in 1974 - has yet to contact the music guru since charges were filed by Californian police last month (NOV03) over Clarkson's February (03) death.

She adds, "I really wanted to stay out of it. I think we'll always be friends because we have children together. I think it best if I don't talk to him now."

The 60-year-old singer was speaking outside Manhattan's Supreme Court where she and her fellow Ronnettes ESTELLE BENNETT and NEDRA TALLEY were attending a hearing over the lawsuit they filed against Spector, in which they claim he owes them money for royalties and recordings made on his label PHILLES.

Spector's lawyer ANDREW BART said the producer was willing to offer the women $890,000 (GBP523,000) for recordings but their lawyer ALEXANDER PELTZ claims the group are owed at least $1.5 million (GBP882,000). A judge will decide the exact amount paid to the BE MY BABY stars.
