Australian cricketer Phil Hughes is in a critical condition in hospital after he was hit on the head by a ball during a game in Sydney on Monday (24Nov14).

The 25 year old was playing for South Australia in a match against New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground when the freak accident occurred.

He collapsed after being struck by the ball, and was treated by medics on the ground before being taken by ambulance to St Vincent's Hospital. The sportsman, who was wearing a helmet at he time of the incident, underwent surgery and remains in a critical condition.

South Australia's team Doctor Peter Bruckner says, "He sustained a severe injury. He was treated on the ground... and taken by ambulance to St Vincent's Hospital... He subsequently underwent surgery and is in a critical condition in the hospital's intensive care unit... He is in the best possible medical hands... His family have asked me to request privacy."

Hughes made his international debut for Australia in 2009.
