The former Pantera frontman hit headlines after he allegedly flashed a Nazi salute and yelled "white power" during a tribute concert for the late 'Dimebag' Darrell Abbott in Los Angeles. Anselmo hit back at the allegations, insisting he was joking about drinking white wine, but he also subsequently apologised for causing any offence.
However, FortaRock organisers are far from impressed with his actions and his explanation and apology, and they have decided to drop the band from their bill in June (16).
"There has been close consultation between all parties in recent days, since we wanted to make a well informed decision," a message on the festival's website reads. "On that basis, the decision is made to cancel the act. We want to make clear that there is no room for racism or fascism on FortaRock."
Anselmo has also come under fire from his peers, who appear to be convinced the Nazi salute was not a joke.
Concerned heavy rockers like MAChine Head's Robb Flynn, who was at the gig, and Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian have taken aim at Anselmo, with Jewish star Ian stating, "Hate speech. Racism. Inflammatory rhetoric. All dangerous no matter what the context."
"I have zero tolerance for any of this and to not speak out against it is as dangerous as the acts themselves," he added on his website. "Philip's acts were vile and that should be the focus here, anything else is just noise. Philip has apologized, and I would like to offer him the opportunity to really show how much he loves everyone by making a donation to the Simon Wiesenthal Center (non-profit organization that fights anti-Semitism)."
A representative for Anselmo has told Billboard.com the rocker has made a generous donation to a human rights charity, and he "will be involved with other like minded, established organizations that educate and address racism, bigotry and the dignity of human rights."
This isn't the first time Anselmo has come under fire for behaviour that might be construed as racist - last March (15), he gave a concert speech, during which he talked about 'white pride'.
