Ashley Fleetwood's husband, Daniel, lost his three-year battle with spindle cell carcinoma in November (15), just four days after Disney bosses granted his dying wish to see the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens movie before its big release this month (Dec15).

Ashley had launched the campaign on social media and won the backing of original franchise stars Mark Hamill and Mayhew, while new leading man John Boyega also voiced his support to help make Daniel's dream come true.

It has since emerged that Peter and his wife Angie, who also live in Texas, personally reached out to Daniel in his final days, and then invited Ashley to join his family celebrations over Christmas, along with a number of other devotees from Star Wars fan club The Star Garrison of the 501st Legion, whose members helped to organise the visit.

"The Mayhews were so kind and gracious," Ashley tells U.S. news show Entertainment Tonight. "When Daniel was sick, they actually Skyped him. It was so sweet and amazing. They invited us to visit, but he was unable to travel.

"After he passed, they extended the invitation again. So I asked if, for my dad's 60th birthday, if we could maybe visit. They said 'yes' and were so welcoming."

Ashley also shared pictures of the trip on Facebook and thanked the Mayhews for their hospitality.

"I want to thank the amazing Peter-Angie Mayhew for inviting my family to their wonderful home," she wrote. "They were so welcoming and kind. I also want thank the 501st for being there as well. Thank you!! You made my dad's birthday."
