Spanish director Pedro Almodovar is ditching silver screen glamour for his latest movie VOLVER - despite enlisting the services of Hollywood beauty Penelope Cruz.

The Oscar-winning film-maker, who has once again recruited Cruz to star in that he calls "a tribute to neighbours", is delving into his own childhood in La Mancha, Spain for the story, using his early memories of life in a close-knit matriarchal community.

He says, "The neighbour was an essential element for good or bad, of life in the village where I grew up.

"And so this is a film about women in the life of the community - female solidarity."
