Paul Weller's father begged him not to break up The Jam at the height of its success, because he was convinced it would spell the end of his musical career.

The singer's profile subsequently soared with The Style Council for seven years, and he is still making records as a solo artist now.

But Weller maintains he didn't have the confidence of those closest to him.

He recalls, "He (Dad) was devastated. His actual words were, 'Are you f**king mad?' Which possibly I was, but I thought it was the right thing to do. And on reflection I think it was definitely the right thing to do.
