Actor Paul Dano had a baptism of fire when he began shooting his role as rock icon Brian Wilson because he had to perform the Beach Boys star's classic track Surf's Up within hours of the cameras rolling.

The There Will Be Blood actor plays the veteran musician at the height of his success in the 1960s in new biopic Love & Mercy, and he learned how to play piano to add authenticity to his role.

However, despite his meticulous preparations, Dano was thrown in at the deep end on only the second day of the shoot when he was instructed to tackle one of Wilson's signature songs.

He tells Uncut magazine, "I knew I had to try to dig in and sing my way into the film. On the second day of filming, I had to play and sing Surf's Up. That was one of the scariest things I've ever done."
