THE DA VINCI CODE star Paul Bettany refused to read the best-selling book before he landed a role in the movie version, because he didn't think it was intellectual enough. The actor admits he dismissed the controversial novel as lightweight because of its popularity - but couldn't put it down once asked to play the role of monk SILAS. He says, "When the script turned up I read it in two days. I had avoided it out of some ghastly English snobbery that really reveals my true nature."
