British actor Patrick Stewart was so desperate to perfect his pronunciation when he took to the stage he dedicated much of his youth learning "how to speak". The X-Men star admits he fought hard to lose his Yorkshire, North East England, accent, and spent entire weekends intensively training himself to speak in more eloquent tones. He says, "I led this double life for a number of years. I had a wonderful teacher. I met her as a result of a drama course. "I'd go to her house every weekend and mostly we'd do SHAKESPEARE, but also to lose my broad West Riding accent. "Sometimes I would sleep overnight in her large rambling house in the country and speak with a voice like the one I now have, and then Monday to Friday I was broad Yorkshire. It led to all kinds of confusion sometimes!"
