Beloved U.S. sportscaster Pat Summerall has died, aged 82.

The former American footballer passed away in a Dallas, Texas hospital on Tuesday (16Apr13).

Summerall became a much-loved football pundit, who commentated on big games, including 16 Super Bowls. He also covered major golf and tennis events.

Poor health forced him to step down as a sportscaster in 2002, two years before he underwent a liver transplant.

Summerall was named National Sportscaster of the Year in 1977 by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association and inducted into its Hall of Fame in 1994. He was inducted into the American Sportscasters Association Hall of Fame in 1999.

Sports fan Lil Wayne was one of the first celebrities to pay tribute to Summerall on Tuesday, writing on his official page, "RIP Pat Summerall. Greatness never dies."
