LATEST: Bosses at fast food chain KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN (KFC) have refused to meet Pamela Anderson to discuss cruelty issues, prompting rap mogul RUSSELL SIMMONS to call the company's CEO directly.
Animal lover Simmons was enraged to hear KFC chief DAVID NOVAK had refused to meet with Anderson and PEOPLE FOR THE ETHICAL TREATMENT OF ANIMALS activists to talk about the company's methods of farming chickens.
Anderson had previously written to Novak, offering to fly to KFC's headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky, for a meeting.
And in a phone conversation with Simmons, Novak reportedly told the rap mogul that his company could not make improvements for chickens because they would be too expensive.
The remarks prompted PETA officials to calculate how much the improvement to the living conditions of their birds would cost. They discovered KFC would actually start making savings after three years if they replaced "crude and ineffective electric stunning and throat-slitting with painless gas killing," and "phased out the forced rapid growth of chickens, which causes their leg bones to become crippled under their own weight."
Meanwhile, Anderson is refusing to give up her crusade - she's planning to urge listeners to her new weekly satellite radio show to boycott KFC products until bosses agree to make changes.07/11/2003 01:52
