Thirteen - Unblinking teenage rebellion, confusion, anger, sex, drugs - Video Streams

The highly acclaimed and controversial film, Thirteen starring Oscar-winner Holly Hunter (The Piano), writer/actress, Nikki Reed and Evan Rachel Wood (The Missing), from first-time director, Catherine Hardwicke (Best Director Award, Sundance Film Festival), comes to VHS & DVD (rental and retail) on May 3, 2004. ‘Thirteen’ is the movie that upset both sides of the Atlantic with its unblinking portrayal of the experiences of two girls growing up in an environment rife with confusion, anger, rebellion, sex, eating disorders and drugs.

Thirteen has already met with critical acclaim on its theatrical release, both in the US and the UK. The film, based upon the experiences of the then 13-year-old co-writer and star Nikki Reed, attracted positive reviews from film reviewers for its honesty, clarity and passion. The film is a hard-hitting, harrowing rollercoaster ride into the dark and complex world of Tracy (Evan Rachel Wood) as she struggles with a raft of teenage issues.

Thirteen follows the transformation of Tracy (Evan Rachel Wood) from an over-achieving, shy student to a destructive teen rebel. The hyper-sexualised, peer-pressured environment of junior high, along with the power and popularity of Evie Zamora (Nikki Reed, co-writer of the script) push Tracy to remake herself into the teen ideal. Once she has worked out the formula for group acceptance she gains Evie as a best friend and starts attracting attention from boys. However, Tracy’s dive into premature adulthood brings her into contact with a side of life that she’s not properly prepared for.

Tracy’s close relationship with her mother (played by Oscar-winning actress Holly Hunter) collapses, she starts failing at school, and

despite her hatred of her mother’s ex-addict boyfriend (Jeremy Sisto), becomes a drug abuser herself. With its unfiltered, uncompromisingly frank view of teenage life, Thirteen holds a mirror up to the face of youth culture and teenage rites of passage.

Thirteen is a remarkable commentary on the effects of being suddenly thrust into a relentless world of consumerism, sex, drugs and aggression. It captures the difficulties of being 13: feeling ostracised, wanting to belong, trying to fit in. The film acknowledges there have always been teenagers at the extremes of culture, but startlingly exposes how these extremes have now become the norm to which the even the best and brightest teens aspire.
