Lucky enough to have one of the UK’s female music icons-in-the-making as a singer, The Duke Spirit have finally released their long-awaited debut album, that is inevitably centred around the suavely dark voice of Liela Moss. Opener ‘Cuts Across The Land’ (that was also one of their first singles) is the perfect taster for what the listener can expect in the coming tracks. Enraged lyrics, guitar effects resembling at times Ennio Moricone’s film soundtracks, accompanied by the madly shaking of Liela’s tambourine and marked by her distintive voice. Early

single ‘Darling you’re mean’, featuring organ and tambourine, is one of the standout tracks of the album and features twisted lyrics such as “you’re trying to hurt me but I won’t let you go, ooh I’m so cheap”. On the other hand, new single “Love is an unfamiliar name” is slightly more uptempo, but maintains the same angst that permeates the entire album. Many “ooh oohs” complete the picture and justify the perception of this band as a very peculiar gem in the UK’s rock panorama.
