The Devils: Dark Circles (Universal Records)

Palatable electro is what you get from this Birmingham based contrary to the fact that their name and album title, will conjure up images of a Satan worshipping metal act that is darker than a winter night in Iceland. Rather than uplifting electronica fuelled tunes with John Foxx style vocals, a sprinkling of Bowie and of course, the influence of Duran Duran is there with keyboardist Nick Rhodes and the guy who jumped ship before they had even left the harbour Stephen Duffy.

The lyrics at times are bold and boastful, but at the same time compelling, as is borne out in the pop tune with cheesy backing vocals; 'World Exclusive':

The Devils

"Hear my world exclusive; I'm the greatest man alive,
aint got no excuses it's easy to forget".

The lyrics are still sung in an unassuming and non committal manner, despite their content. Having broken from the shackles of Duran Duran, Nick Rhodes is clearly relishing the creative freedom that this new project provides him. The Devils are sure to help contribute to the electronica renaissance that the likes of Ladytron, Gus Gus and John Foxx are triggering. If it is pure pop you want or searing electronica, then this intriguing offering has both.
