The Love Experience

There is a nu-soul sensation in our midst as his name is Raheem Devaughn. His debut album ‘The Love Experience’ is released on Jive Records and to me shows that Devaughn is of the heavyweight division. Think D’Angelo and you will be getting a hint of what this guy can do.

Raheem is definitely the real deal. He has amazing tone, vocal range and a deep conviction in his delivery. You can tell he’s studied the past masters of soul. There’s hints of Donnie Hathaway, Prince, Ohio Players and modern contempories like D’Angelo. ‘Guess Who Loves You More’ to me is a nu-soul classic with true heart felt

emotion and groove to really uplift the soul. Tracks like ‘Who’, ‘Breathe’ and ‘Cadillac’ have a strong Prince influence taking harmonies to a new level. The production is velvety smooth keeping funky grooves and laid back soulful styles throughout the album. There’s guitar there as well in some tracks relating to the inspiration of Sly Stone. The music is well produced and works very well with Devaughn’s voice.

The main thing to me about ‘The Love Experience’ is that there’s no selling out here. This is first class soul with true emotion. We can listen to this album and happily drift along with a new found optimism. It keeps the musical integrity of the present to make it a contemporary album yet we here hints of the past. Raheem Devaughn has made a cracking debut album that to me has longevity and certainly established himself in the big league. Go out and buy it.
