Singer's First Solo Career Retrospective
Available From Rhino September 27

LOS ANGELES -- As Natalie Merchant looks back on 15 years as a solo artist, Rhino Records pays tribute to her powerful singing and vivid songwriting with RETROSPECTIVE 1990-2005. This 28-song, two-disc set is filled with fan favorites and features an entire disc dedicated to unreleased outtakes, rarities, B-sides, and two new recordings.

Merchant's first solo-career compilation, RETROSPECTIVE 1990-2005, is available September 27 at regular physical and digital retail outlets and at www.rhino.com for a suggested price of $29.98. A single-disc version of the CD consisting of only the hits will be available on the same date for $18.98. Compiled by Merchant, the first disc spotlights her favorite songs selected from all four of her studio albums -- Tigerlily, Ophelia, Motherland, and The House Carpenter's Daughter. Opening with a trio of hits from Tigerlily, Merchant's 1995 solo debut, RETROSPECTIVE 1990-2005 includes "Carnival," which reached #10 on Billboard's Pop chart, plus the single versions of "Wonder" and "Jealously," both of which cracked the Top 25 of Billboard's Pop chart. The anthology also includes "Kind and Generous," a song from Ophelia that peaked at #18 on Billboard's Pop chart.

The second disc of RETROSPECTIVE 1990-2005 dips below the radar for hard-to-find and unreleased music. "She Devil," a last minute deletion from Ophelia, makes its debut, as does "Cowboy Romance," which was recorded during the sessions for The House Carpenter's Daughter. Also included are Merchant's collaborations with The Chieftans, R.E.M., and Susan McKeown, plus three duets with Billy Bragg. Two new versions of previously released song --"Thick As Thieves" from Ophelia and "Tell Yourself" from Motherland --were recorded this summer.

RETROSPECTIVE 1990-2005 includes a track-by-track commentary penned by Merchant who reveals the inspiration behind many of her songs and how her memories are inextricably tied to music. "I tend to remember the events in my life and the people who have participated in them through the context of album cycles: writing, recording and performing," she writes. "They are my little epochs."
