My Computer - Vulnerabilia - Audio Streams

Following 5-star reviews and 'album of the week' plaudits for their incredible debut album 'VULNERABILIA', Manchester duo MY COMPUTER release the album's title track as a single on 14th October on 13 Amp.

The follow-up to their debut single, the extraordinary 9min one-sided 12", "All I Ever Really Wanted Was A Good Time", "VULNERABILIA" is released on 12" and CD single formats, both of which feature new and exclusive B-sides. "Detoxification" is included on both formats, whilst the CD single additionally includes the track "Covered Up".

The single itself documents singer and lyricist Chesy's heartfelt tale of redemption and hope found during his 12 years on the dole in Urmston, West Manchester, set to the breathtaking musical invention of his MY COMPUTER collaborator Dave Luke. As Chesy sings;

"How did it ever get to being this way?/ In the drug store/ I found what I was looking for/ And then I found I must find more/ I was so sure there was no cure/ then I fell in love with the dancefloor".

MY COMPUTER are currently rehearsing for their debut UK live shows, which will take place in the Autumn.

My Computer collide styles with what would appear to be suicidal abandon, and yet somehow, somehow produce a record of rare quality. Turn it up loud and listen: The Associates, Daft Punk, Rachmaninoff, The Streets, Queen, Radiohead, Prodigy, Jeff Buckley, Happy Mondays, whoever wrote the music for Wonderful World of Disney…it's all there. And it all binds together to make an hour of the most exciting, intelligent, compassionate and profoundly sad music you are likely to hear this year. Where did a record this extraordinary come from? Well, perhaps not entirely surprisingly, from Manchester.

While so many of today's pre-teen pleasing complaint rockers profess to be in the gutter staring down the drain, My Computer remember when there were stars to be looked at from down there. It's seems a good while since beautiful music about ugly circumstances has had this much power. The first line on 'Vulnerabilia' is "all I ever really wanted was a good time", but do they get one? Well, yes and no… voice-of-an-angel singer and lyricist Chesy explains that he took Morrissey at his word when he said "sing your life". It isn't always easy listening.

Much of 'Vulnerabilia' concerns itself with - shall we say - the seamier side of life on the margins. Written with a little imagination and a certain amount of verité
by Chesy and musical collaborator Dave, songs such as 'No More Dealing', 'Rope', 'I Don't Care How You Treat Me' and 'For Somebody Else', are pretty frank and unambiguous in their documenting of the raw circumstances of 12 years spent on the dole queue and in the pubs and alleyways of Urmston, West Manchester. It is all the more surprising then that these subjects are elevated by the hope that consistently permeates the lyrics and the breathtaking invention of Dave's musical treatments.

Dave - going somewhat against the grain of ideal previous careers for rock stars - is something of an expert on the physics of liquid crystals and the human brain. Science has suggested that the brain may be the most complex and organised matter in the universe. But, while we all know a mind is terrible thing to waste, sometimes you've just got to get wasted. This is the chemistry at the centre of My Computer; Chesy searching for structure and meaning in the chaos and Dave studying and deconstructing it like a mathematician.

As bewildering as they are enlightening in their attempts to encompass the dizzying parameters of their taste and experience, My Computer are trailblazing the road for true musical schizophrenics - though it's hard to see how anyone's going to have guts, passion, talent, or indeed, brains to follow them.
