Paullelujah |
MC Paul Barman As in "Paullelujah, this album is finally ready!" However, theres a very good reason why MC Paul Barmans first full-length album has been so long in the making. Simply put, you cant rush genius. Born in suburban New Jersey, MC Paul Barman is an uncanny cunning lyricist. His crafty combination of polysyllabic multi-rhymes, pop culture references, mathematics, comedy, sex, and politics demands repeated close listening. Even though Paul Barmans curly locks, unbridled whiteness, and Jewish heritage defy hip-hop convention, his DIY ethics, penchant for wordplay, and talents as a cartoonist make him the quintessential well-rounded artist. Paullelujah contains a convenient newspaper of lyrics, entitled The Jew Dork Rimes, that features Pauls illustrations and head-spinning words. Tackling many different weighty issues from school reform to the war on terror ("Make No Mistake"), to screwing celebrities ("Cock Mobster") Paullelujah manages to cover all the bases (with an emphasis on 3rd and "going all the way"). San Franciscos MikeTheMusicGuy, a West Coast cohort of Prince Paul and Dan the Automator, handled most of the production. "Anarchist Bookstore" (parts 1 and 2) was produced by seminal hip-hop producer and artist, MF Doom. "Bleeding Brain Grow" sees the return of Prince Paul (who also produced Its Very Stimulating), and includes daring, never-before attempted palindrome rhymes. Most remarkable is how MC Paul Barman has built his stunning reputation on one EP (Its Very Stimulating, 2000, Wordsound) and one single ("How Hard Is That?," 2000, Matador). Rolling Stone tagged his EP as one of the "Top Fifty Albums of 2000," and The New York Times featured him. Perhaps his notorious live show packed with indiscreet onstage antics and the occasional impromptu audience member portrait helped a bit. Quite fittingly, Paul very often throws out gold coin condoms with gold coin Chanukah chocolate. He has toured with the likes of Del the Funkee Homosapien, Blackalicious, and Dalek. | |
