Martina Topley Bird Live Review @ The Hi Fi Club Leeds

The Hi-Fi club in Leeds was rather a strange choice of venue for rising star Martina Topley Bird to play. The underground venue that only holds only 350 people is more suitable for slinky club nights rather than as a live music venue but this made the night that little bit more special. By the time Martina had come on stage the place was jam packed with eager ears waiting to hear a woman that rumors have been very kind to.

Altogether there were 9 people on stage including Martina, the most eccentric looking of the nine was a guy wearing a full cream 50's style suit topped off with a trilby, he started the ball rolling opening with a human beat box & harmonica solo. This really got the crowd in a great mood; Martina's vocals remained strong as she worked her way through songs off her new album Quixotic. There were a few minor electrical hiccups on the night but nothing

that could be blamed on anyone in particular.

The whole gig was extremely enjoyable, differing musical styles, from rock to jazz complimented one and other extremely well. For anyone who likes Quixotic would really enjoy the Mercury nominated musician & her band. I saw Morcheeba at Glastonbury this year headlining on the one world stage, I can really see Martina fitting into the music scene somewhere on a par with Morcheeba when they released The Big Calm. Seeing as this was Martina's first headline tour she did extremely well and holds a lot of promise for the future. I really hope this isn't the last I hear of her.
