Riding the wave of the current international rock and roll scene could have been the easiest choice for a band like Canadians Hot Hot Heat, while recording their new album. But with ‘Elevator’ the Victoria B.C. residents chose to stay true to themselves, or even to better themselves, without compromising with chart-topping influences. Starting from the fact track 13 has purposedly not been recorded, and that the track order on the sleeve is upside down, Steve Bays and co. - with the help of superproducer Dave Sardi - made a

crackingly original collection of songs driven by the same energy of previous ‘Make Up the Breakdown’, but with added sugar-fuelled melodies and surprisingly “happier” twists. Some of the stories behind the songs are definitely not that happy. Single ‘Middle of Nowhere’ was in fact written about a night at London Astoria when Steve Bays and his girlfriend were almost breaking up, and ‘Jingle Jangle’ is about a mid-life crisis he had in his early twenties. Stand up tracks ‘You owe me and IOU’ and ‘Goodnight Goodnight’ complete the picture with singalong choruses and hooky piano & drums combinations. Worth the effort.
