GARFIELD - The movie Review

newspaper incarnation whilst being real enough to be acceptable in a live action feature. But enough about the way he looks Garfield is all about personality, the dry wit and sarcasm that has made him such a favourite of newspaper readers worldwide is captured in the very funny script and is so perfectly delivered by Bill Murray it is impossible to imagine anyone else in the role. For me Murray has always been the voice of Garfield and for once the casting director seems to have agreed with me as, I'm sure, so will you.

After a good long stretch of simply wallowing in the stars personality Garfield the movie faces our hero with a hairy problem in the shape of Odie, his long suffering owner John's new pet dog. Odies' arrival means Garfield is no longer centre of attention and naturally incensed, Garfield kicks the poor puppy our into the night where he runs away and is captured by an evil TV celebrity. Garfield is roundly condemned by the other pets on the street for being so mean and so is shamed into trying to rescue the hapless Odie. Laughs ensue as Garfield is forced to leave the safety of his cul-de-sac and venture into the big city to rescue his canine housemate.

The wealth of gags and humour that exist from the many years as a newspaper strip meant that Garfield should really always have been a sure fire success and I'm glad to say it is. The sarcasm and gluttony of Garfield is enough to see the adult audience through the movie whilst the dancing cat sequences and slapstick are more than enough to keep the children entertained. Add into the mix Jennifer Love-Hewitt in what must have been one of her less taxing paydays to keep the dads interested for an hour and a half and you've got a great value comedy feature.

As I said earlier Bill Murray is more than perfect in the title role and a strong supporting cast that capture Garfield 's long suffering four legged friends expertly. This film is a great all round family movie and a sure fire hit.
