Courtney Love’s ‘America’s Sweetheart’ - Album Review

Courtney Love
America’s Sweetheart

‘America’s Sweetheart’ is a long awaited album, eagerly sought after, bringing questions with it: will it be any good? Is going to be the same as the stuff in Hole? Can the music rise above her personal life which has been dragged through the press. Well, the music is alright but it definitely doesn’t set the world on fire. The start of the album sounds like Hole, just a poppier, tireder version of it. Then the next two songs come on and the pace is slowed down. ‘Hold On To Me’ is a tender, melodic, almost love song ambiguously about either a lover or her kid.

Music - Courtney Love’s ‘America’s Sweetheart’ - Album Review
The album sort of alternates between faster, punkier songs and slower, more melodicones. ‘All the Drugs’, ‘I’ll Do Anything’ and ‘TheZeplin Song’ are more tracks that are like that in Hole with a bit of Nirvanathrown in on ‘I’ll Do Anything’. The only problem is that Love’snights of partying have had an effect on her voice which is more cracked andcareworn than before and doesn’t quite fit the youth and vigour of themusic. The tunes which work best are the slower ones such as ‘Uncool’ that’sreally lovely – an unrequited love song and distinctly differently. I hadmy doubts about the album after hearing the first single, ‘Mono’ butit’s actually pretty good. And to answer the last question, America’sSweetheart can’t quite rise above her personal life.
