Coldplay ‘X&Y’
The new album released June 6 th 2005

Coldplay’s new album ‘X&Y’ will be released by Parlophone on June 6 th. Recorded in London over the latter part 2004 and early 2005, ‘X&Y’ was produced by Danton Supple, Ken Nelson and the band.

The follow up to the 10 million selling, multiple Brit & Grammy Award winning ‘A Rush Of Blood To The Head’, ‘X&Y’ is a big album in every sense of the word. The songs are huge. The music is sometimes quiet and intimate but at other times builds to a massive, layered sound that breaks new ground for Coldplay. The lyrics are about big subjects like life and death, love and loss, about being fascinated by the world around us but also about accepting that some things can never be fully understood. There’s the usual emphasis on strong songwriting, but the way the new songs have been treated shows a band that is growing, maturing, and ready to try new things.

The kind of raw, emotional songs that Coldplay do so well are still here; ‘Swallowed In The Sea’, written early in 2004 and written about coming to terms with the death of people close to you; the simple, moving love song ‘A Message’; and the achingly beautiful ‘What If’. But elsewhere Coldplay enter new territory: title track ‘X&Y’ is inspired by ‘Abbey Road’-era Beatles; in ‘Talk’ they take the riff from Kraftwerk’s ‘Computer Love’ and build a glorious, affecting rock song around it; while album closer ‘Twisted Logic’ displays a darker, angrier side to the band.

So ‘X&Y’ is yet another leap forward from ‘Parachutes’ and ‘A Rush of Blood To The Head’. An ambitious, confident and exhilarating album from a band at the peak of their powers, ‘X&Y’ is destined to become the benchmark release of 2005.

Coldplay, comprised of Guy Berryman (bass), Jonny Buckland (lead guitar), Will Champion (drums) and Chris Martin (vocals, guitar, keyboards), formed in London in 1998. Their double Platinum 2000 debut, ‘Parachutes’, featured the international hit singles ‘Yellow’ and ‘Trouble’ and won the band 2 Brits and a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. 2002’s ‘A Rush Of Blood To The Head’ was another critical and commercial smash, giving the band their second UK No.1 album with the biggest first week sale of any album that year.

Coldplay will go on the road summer in support of ‘X&Y’. The first leg of their world tour sees them playing their biggest ever UK headline shows:
