Jazz musicians Ornette Coleman and the late ANDREW HILL swept the board at the JJA Jazz Awards on Thursday (28Jun07).
Coleman took the top honour at the New York ceremony - winning the Pulitzer prize for his Sound Grammar album - as well as receiving awards for Album Of The Year and Best Small Ensemble, as well as Alto Saxophonist and Musician Of The Year.
The late jazz musician Andrew Hill, who died of cancer earlier this year (Apr07), posthumously won prizes for Composer and Pianist Of The Year and for Lifetime Achievement In Jazz.
His widow Joanne Robinson said, "Saturday is Andrew's birthday. You know that he was so happy and honoured to be participating with all of you in this great art."
Other winners included saxophonist Anat Cohen for Up-and-Coming Artist Of The Year, singer Roberta Gambarini for Female Singer, Kurt Elling won again for Male Singer Of The Year.
