One Direction have been given another reason to celebrate after scooping the first prize of the night at the American Music Awards, hours after scoring their latest number one album in the U.K.

The boyband learned Four had hit the top of the U.K. albums chart on Sunday afternoon (23Nov14), and hours later, the British/Irish pop stars were back in the spotlight, claiming the title for Favorite Band, Duo Or Group - Pop/Rock over competitors Imagine Dragons and OneRepublic.

Accepting the honour, Liam Payne told the audience, "It's been a real perfect day for us, our album's just come out and we got a number one in the U.K. and now we're stood here with an Ama.

"It's absolutely amazing... America feels like a second home to us now, it's been amazing how well we've been received out here so thank you so, so much."

Ironically, Harry Styles and his bandmates took to the stage at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles just moments after his ex-girlfriend, Taylor Swift, kicked off the show with a fiery performance of her new single Blank Space.

Other performers of the night are set to include Fergie, Sam Smith, Lorde, Selena Gomez, Imagine Dragons, Jennifer Lopez and Iggy Azalea, and Nicki Minaj, Ariana Grande and Jessie J, with Pitbull serving as host for the second consecutive year.

Rapper Azalea leads all nominations with six, just ahead of John Legend, Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams, who each have five.
