Octavia Spencer has told the New York Post that the one thing that can make her speechless is "winning an Oscar." She was asked the question after the star-studded Academy Awards ceremony had ended on Sunday night (February 26, 2012) and looked at her statuette with disbelief, before answering. Octavia won her award for Best Supporting Actress for playing the role of Minny Jackson in The Help.
She went on to say "winning anything, I don't feel worthy. I'm up there because I had a great writer / director, great source material and brilliant actors around me." Spencer's co-stars Viola Davis and Jessica Chastain were also nominated for Oscars on Sunday night, though neither were victorious. Octavia said "I share this with my cast mates, quite honestly". Octavia beat competition from Janet McTeer, Melissa McCarthy and Berenice Bejo, as well as her co-star Jessica Chastain, to win the Oscar.
Spencer also impressed on the red carpet, in a floor length silver gown. Speaking to Ellen Degeneres earlier in the month, she revealed her red carpet secret of 'triple spanking' - i.e. wearing three pairs of 'Spanx,' the figure-shaping underwear designed to conceal a woman's bulges. Talking of one uncomfortable awards ceremony, adorned with several pairs of Spanx she said "Oh, Ellen. Let me tell you, I couldn't party that night because I was being pinched in places I didn't know it was possible! And I ran into Melissa Mccarthy, who is in "Bridesmaids" and brilliant and one of my closest friends, and I was like, 'Oh my God, Melissa! I'm about to die! My Spanx are killing me!' She said, 'I just went to the bathroom and took mine off.'"
