'The Vampire Diaries' star Nina Dobrev has backed President Barack Obama over his support of same-sex marriage. Dobrev is just one of numerous celebrities who have applauded the world leader for his stance on the issue, reports MTV News.
The President threw his support behind the idea during an interview with ABC News on Wednesday (May 9, 2012) and since then Dobrev, Neil Patrick Harris, George Clooney and boy-band The Wanted have all made it clear they are pro-Obama. The Vampire Diaries actress said, "I didn't see the announcement when he made it, but I've heard obviously a lot about it, and I think it's great that that man, the President of the United States, who is influential, who people really admire and listen to, is making such a statement, such a sort of controversial statement". Dobrev, who is dating her co-star Ian Somerhalder, added, "I don't think [it] should be controversial at this point because we're living in the 21st Century, but I'm glad that he's supporting gay marriage, and hopefully others will follow suit". Her statement was echoed by British pop stars The Wanted, who said, "I think it was a logical step, about time.I wish it was church-led in my opinion, but I don't care, it's out there now. Well done, Obama and Co! Even if it was for the right or wrong reasons, it's definitely the right outcome".
It was well documented that President Obama attended a $40,000-a-head fundraiser at the home of George Clooney on Thursday evening (May 10, 2012).
