The pop star previously appeared on the panel from 2012 to 2013, and now she's signed on to mentor a new batch of aspiring singers for the programme's 13th season, according to the Daily Mail.

"Nicole Scherzinger was a huge success when she was on the X Factor a few years ago and has long been part of the X Factor family," an insider tells the publication. "She provided fun and entertainment and a huge personality to the show. She is the definite favourite to get the seat next to Simon (Cowell)."

The X Factor boss is reportedly bringing back two other show veterans - Louis Walsh and Sharon Osbourne - who previously served on the panel with Nicole in 2013, however, talks with Sharon have apparently been put "on the back burner" as she tackles the fall-out from her recent marriage split.

News of Nicole's return comes hours after fellow pop star Rita Ora confirmed she is quitting the show after just one season in order to focus on her music and film career. Her departure was the latest shake-up after radio DJ Nick Grimshaw and Cheryl, formerly known by her married name Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, previously gave notice as well.

Earlier this year (16), co-hosts Olly Murs and Caroline Flack also revealed they would not be returning to present the show.

Auditions for The X Factor are already underway, with new hopefuls trying out in Liverpool, England this weekend (14May16).
