Nicole Kidman has won her libel battle with British newspaper THE DAILY MAIL over their reports she was the reason behind Jude Law's split with wife Sadie Frost.

The Moulin Rouge! actress has accepted a public apology and "substantial" undisclosed damages for the false claims of her adulterous affair with her Cold MOUNTAIN co-star.

A London High Court libel judge heard that The Daily Mail alleged on 6 March (03) she had led Law to cheat on Frost - the mother of his three children - causing the breakdown of his six-year marriage.

The paper had also suggested Kidman's repeated claims of innocence were dishonest.

Solicitor GIDEON BENAIM told MR JUSTICE GRAY, "The publication of this article has caused grave damage to the claimant's personal and professional reputation and she has suffered considerable embarrassment and distress.

"Her embarrassment was particularly acute as the allegations coincided with the run-up to The Oscars award ceremony in Los Angeles in which she had been nominated for an award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her role in The Hours."

ASSOCIATED NEWSPAPERS, Mail editor PAUL DACRE and journalist NICOLE LAMPERT accepted the allegations were untrue and without foundation, before apologising for the distress and embarrassment caused and agreeing to pay legal costs and damages.
