Nicole Kidman is out to save the panda after getting the chance to see the National Zoo's new arrival TAI SHAN in Washington DC.

The actress was among guests who witnessed the four-month-old baby panda's first public appearance at the zoo and now she's devoted to doing what she can to highlight the endangered species' plight.

She says, "There are only about a thousand (pandas) left in the world. I'm on a mission now. I'm thinking about doing something with the Discovery Channel."

Kidman is also hoping to take her crusade to the big screen by turning the true story of a woman who visits China in the 1930s to adopt a panda, THE LADY + THE PANDA, into a new movie.
