The Australian designer's death was confirmed by Rocco Hindman, the head of the agency that represented her, but he told the Associated Press her family had requested her age and cause of death not to be publicised.

However, when Australian actress Nicole Kidman picked up the Style Icon of the Year at the InStyle Awards in Los Angeles on Monday (24Oct16), she paid tribute to Patterson and reportedly said she had died on Friday (21Oct16), according to the Los Angeles Times.

“This is for her,” Kidman said while she accepted her award. “Now she’s not here, but she lives on through those beautiful clothes and images."

Patterson, who passed away in her native Australia, was nominated for the Oscars four times for her work on films Bright Star, The Piano, Oscar and Lucinda and The Portrait of a Lady, which starred Kidman.

She frequently collaborated with directors Jane Campion and Gillian Armstrong, specialised in period costume from the 19th century, and occasionally worked as a production designer.

Her other film credits include the 2003 version of Peter Pan and Holy Smoke, while her most recent credit was the 2015 Carey Mulligan movie Far From the Madding Crowd.
