Nicki Minaj has taken a handy cue from the President of the United States and handily backtracked on claims that she'll be voting Republican in the forthcoming US elections. There were a lot of confused sideways glances and much head-scratching going on when reports of Minaj's Republican-happy rap came out last week, cropping up on Lil Wayne's mixtape with the couplet "I'm a Republican voting for Mitt Romney/You lazy bitches is fucking up the economy."
It was Barack Obama himself that opened up an opportunity for Nicki to explain her political choices, when he was interviewed on the Florida radio station 95.3, NME report today (September 11, 2012). During the interview, Obama ruminated "Yeah, I'm not sure that's actually what happened. I think she had a song on there, a little rap that said that. But she likes to play different characters. So I don't know what's going on there."
On her Twitter feed, Minaj responded to Obama's explanation by confirming that she was, indeed, in character when she vocalized her support for Romney. And she paid tribute to Obama's superior intelligence, in the process: "Ha! Thank you for understanding my creative humor & sarcasm Mr. President, the smart ones always do... sends love & support. Now I can tell my grandchildren that the 1st black President of the United States took the time to address a Nicki Minaj question." We're glad this one's been cleared up; we simply couldn't see Nicki as a Romney supporter, somehow.
