The veteran star passed away on Sunday (06Dec15) after a stint in hospital. No more details about his death were available as WENN went to press.

"It is with great sadness we can confirm that our client, the actor Nicholas Smith, passed away yesterday," explained his agent Rebecca Kirby. "He was a lovely man and a terrific actor. He will be much missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts are with his family."

Smith is best known for playing bumbling shop floor manager Mr Rumbold in the hit BBC sitcom, which ran from 1972 until 1985, alongside Mollie Sugden, John Inman and Wendy Richard.

Throughout his career, Smith also appeared in shows such as Doctor Who, The Saint, and The Avengers, and he enjoyed a recurring role in hit crime drama Z Cars.

He also featured in 2005 animated Wallace & Gromit film The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, in which he provided the voice of vegetable-obsessed vicar Clement Hedges.
