Writer Daniel B. Meltzer has died at the age of 74.

Meltzer passed away of prostate cancer on 6 November (14) in Manhattan, according to the New York Times.

He was known for his series of short stories, titled the Outsiders, and for plays including The Square Root of Love, which appeared off-Broadway.

He was also a professor at New York University and served as a writer and editor at news outlets including CBS News and The Villager.

In addition to his writing career, Meltzer served as the chairman of Save the Beacon committee, an organisation founded to help to save the historic Beacon Theatre from being turned into a nightclub.
