British singer FLORENCE WELCH almost refused to release her debut album LUNGS - because she was so heartbroken after splitting from her longterm boyfriend.
The Florence And The MAChine frontwoman was distraught when she broke up with her partner, identified only as Stuart, in 2008, and considered giving up on her promising music career.
But Welch channelled her grief into her new music after weeks of heartache.
She says, "About 18 months ago I was in a seriously bad way. I'd broken up with Stuart, I felt out of control and I was very raw and not in a good frame of mind. I'd gone from being this art student messing about with music to this girl with a record deal, magazine front covers and all this hype. In many ways, it was everything I ever wanted, but when it happened all I felt was total, paralysing fear. I couldn't cope with the idea of making the album. I just wanted to sabotage the whole thing, not do it and just disappear.
"It seemed so wrong that when I was so unhappy in my personal life, my career was suddenly taking off. Something inside me wanted to ruin everything. I spent a lot of time just crying. I felt quite reckless with grief. I didn't care about anything. Then I went on a family holiday and spent two weeks just not being able to get out of bed. I came back to London for an appointment in the studio. When I started singing, all the bad feelings started to fall away and I realised this was what I needed.
"I got through that depression, that heartbreak and so many other things with the album, which is why it's so emotional. It's possibly why so many people connect with it."
The season 7 premiere guests featured some cast members we haven't seen much of for a while.
This year's Rotterdam event was definitely one to remember.
